Indian Nurses: A Force To Reckon With On The Global Map

India currently has over 3 million registered nurses and midwives.

Nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare industry, and Indian nurses have been known worldwide for their immense contribution to the sector.

Nurses are often put on a pedestal and responsible for recognizing patients’ needs and catering to them accordingly.

Sending Indian nurses abroad is a way of boosting employment since the profession is in huge demand globally.

The demand for Indian nurses is rapidly rising. In 2021, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) announced that it would supply 300,000 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and allied health personnel, to several countries by 2022.

India has always been the world’s biggest source of immigrant nurses. Whether it’s the UK, the USA, UAE or any other country, Indian nurses have become a crucial part of their healthcare system, leaving no stone unturned to improve patient care.

The development of nursing education in India has dramatically impacted the growing requirements of foreign healthcare institutions. As the number of institutions offering nursing degrees has sharply increased, several government institutions providing nursing education at subsidized rates have also been helpful.

Many Indian nurses work in the UK, the US, Gulf countries, OECD countries, and some Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.

The UK

The official figures of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) show about 37,815 Indian nurses in the UK, up from 28,192 in 2021. The significant rise is boosting the workforce and driving the healthcare sector in the UK.

The USA

The United States offers excellent infrastructure to draw international nurses, and Indian nurses see the US as a potential source to advance in their careers. As per LinkedIn, registered nursing was the fifth most in-demand job in the US as of February 2021.

The United Arab Emirates

Recently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) health department omitted the mandatory two-year work experience to recruit nurses and laboratory technicians/technologists. Nurses can now appear for the UAE Health Department’s exam who holds a nursing degree from a recognized Indian institution, a good conduct certificate, and a nursing council registration. However, the criteria still exist if the nurses want to work in UAE schools.

Why Is The Demand For Indian Nurses Rising?

Countries have considered India a significant sourcing partner to fulfill their requirements and overcome the rising nursing shortages. The demand for skilled and English-speaking nurses has only grown over the years.

Let’s understand precisely why the demand is rising.

  • The demand in developed countries is rising as the population is aging and the younger population is continuously declining.
  • Kerala nurses often migrate to Gulf countries as the number of hospitals has increased significantly.
  • Another demand arises due to the popularity and requirements of medical tourism. Governments worldwide are promoting the new form of tourism, eventually increasing the need for talented nurses to deliver better patient care. The global medical tourism market was at USD 4.0 billion in 2021 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 32.51% from 2022 to 2030.
